Financial Regulations - Track record on protecting investors -

In 1980, Massachusetts regulators banned Apple’s stock from being bought by residents of the state or traded by brokers in the state, because the IPO was considered to be “too risky”.  The company later went on to be the most valuable listed company in the world, valued at over $350 billion.

Meanwhile, in 1992, the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston issued a mandate that banks increase lending to people in preferred demographic categories, despite lack of credit history, stating “Lack of credit history should not be seen as a negative factor”.  Later, these regulator-mandated, high-risk loans went on to default and to trigger a financial crisis, taxpayer bailout of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and ultimately the great recession.
